The question "Why is freelance work becoming popular?" is being raised more and more often since the current economic crisis took hold. It is fair to say that freelancing has always been popular but that it has only recently been habitually called that. The more usual name and the one which most people recognise immediately is 'self employment'.

Before the worldwide global recession, many people had a very favorable and traditional view of work. They thought that going to work every day and punching a time clock or filling in a time sheet and picking up a paycheck was stable and that it was safe. After huge amounts of unemployment, most people, especially the ones who find themselves unemployed, probably don't hold the same views anymore.

If a job is lost that means the income lost must be replaced as soon as possible. Food still needs to be eaten and provided if they have a family. Also, rent or mortgage still has to pay in order to have a place to live.

There are those who make a good second income by doing menial labor tasks in exchange for money, often referred to as moon lighting. Even if a main job is lost, that person can still fall back on their moon lighting income. Usually people who moon light don't earn a significant amount of income, they just do it as a side income; however, that doesn't mean that it can't be turned into a full time income with the right amount of planning and execution.

Welcome to the world of the freelancer! Anybody who has an 'in demand' skill can set themselves up as a freelance worker. Depending upon the type of skills they have and the time it takes them to complete each freelance assignment, their earnings can be calculated to provide all the income they need.

Here is a real world example. We can say that Jack is interested in becoming a freelancer and will cut grass. Jack can do some rough, but pretty accurate estimates on how long it will take him to cut grass of lawns of particular sizes. Let's say that Jack knows that it will take him only thirty minutes to cut a lawn that is only one hundred square yards and for doing so he can earn $15; in eight hours he could mow six hundred square yards which would earn him $90 per day. If Jack wants to work five days he could easily earn $450 a week from cutting grass. As a freelance worker you will also receive some beneficial tax breaks. Anything that is an expense that is directly related to your freelance work can be deducted from the taxes you would owe on your freelance income. You may have to register with your local tax office in order to become a freelance worker. This is okay because they will also offer you free tax advice on how to take full advantage of any deductions.

Another advantage to being self employed is that you can have tax deductions related to your work. Any costs which are associated with the work done can be deducted off of taxes owed on the income. If you want to become a freelance worker, you may have to register with your local tax office. This isn't too terrible because they know all the rules and can help ensure you make the proper deductions. They will gladly share this information with you for free.

The cause of freelance work becoming popular is quite easy to see now. Most everyone has some sort of skill that they can use to make themselves money with, they can get tax breaks, and if they have the motivation and a plan can actually earn more money than a regular job and best of all can plan their work around their family time instead of the other way around.
