The Mayan Calendar has left us with a profound mystery. Acadamia, science and the clergy have labored long over the question as to why the calendar was extrapolated into the 21st century and why, on December 21st, 2012, it abruptly ends?

Writers are picking up on the topic as speculation and theories are on the rise. From a scientific standpoint, the prophecy is nothing more than clinical. Around the date December 21, 2012, the galaxy will be totally aligned, an event with a recurrence of 26,000 years. No one really knows the implication of this, though many have speculated that there will be massive influence on our weather systems, earthquakes will be induced, volcanoes will erupt and tsunamis will be in force. A more realistic prediction, based on what them planet has had to endure in the past, is that it will most likely see this through.

The impact on population is not clear to anyone at this point. However, it is believed by science that the Mayan Calendar, which is based on a 26,000 year cycle, will return to the beginning of its cycle.

Acadamia has remained outside the argument but confesses to the problem as "interesting." On the other hand, religion has offered some stunning hypotheses that range from the very grim to the quintessential era for mankind.

The Bible indicates that there will be a war between good and evil prior to the "end of days", with Christ's followers pitted against Satan's army and he who triumphs taking control of the planet and its people.

A more optimistic rendering is that mankind will enter the seventh day of creation, or the "Sabbath Rest." This theory is founded on the notion that "God created the heavens and the Earth in six days and rested on the seventh day." Theologists maintain that "God's day" is, in fact, 26,000 of our years. To compute that even six of God's days does not equal the life of our planet is to blindly assume that the Almighty worked his magic on consecutive days. With the impending advent of this cycle on December 21st, 2012, a belief is held that we will be entering this seventh day. This "day of rest", or "Sabbath Rest" will begin a season of peace for mankind.

According to many Christians, Jesus Christ will return to the earth to lead his chosen people to heaven. These people will also include people who have been long dead.

With a little over to years to think about, it will be interesting to see which 2012 prophecy argument comes true.
